Dubai Declares 10 Days of Mourning for Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Dubai has declared a 10-day official mourning period following the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

According to Time Out Dubai, Sheikh Ahmed passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 76. During the official mourning period, flags across the emirate of Dubai will be flown at half-mast.  The announcement was made by the Court of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. 

Who Was Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum?

Sheikh Ahmed held several important leadership roles in Dubai. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, was Group Chairman of A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre, and also served as chairman of UAE Pro League football club Al Wasl FC. He was also the Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai.  His roles connected him with several areas of Dubai’s development, including public service, real estate, business and sport.

What Does the Mourning Period Mean?

The official mourning period will last for 10 days. During this period, flags across Dubai will be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect.  For residents and businesses, it is also appropriate to expect a more subdued public atmosphere during the mourning period. Organisations planning events, campaigns or public-facing activities may wish to check official announcements and adjust communications where appropriate out of respect for the occasion.
